I am inspired by the form of
the classic jug from the 20th and 21st century. The modernist and cubist
movements have been my points of reference, using their concept of a well
designed form with facets and angles as inspiration. I take existing vessels
and recreate the forms that reflect not only the garish over-decorated 19th
Century vessels, also, the cubist theory of the 1910s, the constructivists of
the 1920s and the deconstructivist period of the 1980s. This is explored
through the cohesive integration of form, drawing and surface pattern. I
deconstruct my drawings and create my own interpretation of the abstract jug.
It is the marriage of form and function that intrigues me and the distortion of
the domestic object which is familiar yet foreign in form.
I deconstruct the shape of
the jug by folding the drawings and re-designing them through a layout pad.
This is where they evolve into three dimensional objects. The concept of a
collective piece is important to me especially the excess of form and
decoration in contrast to my initial contextual reference of minimalism that
concentrates on the bare fundamental values of design.

Rwy’n cael fy ysbrydoli gan
ffurf y jwg glasurol o’r 20fed a’r 21ain ganrif. Y mudiadau ciwbaidd a modernaidd
oedd y mannau cyfeirio pwysig ar gyfer fy ngwaith, a defnyddiais eu cysyniad o
ffurf wedi’i dylunio’n dda gydag onglau ac arwynebau fel ysbrydoliaeth. Rwy’n
defnyddio jygiau sy’n bodoli ac yn eu hail-greu gan adlewyrchu ffurfiau
gorliwgar y 19eg ganrif yn ogystal â theori giwbaidd y 1910au, adeileddwyr y 1920au
a chyfnod dadadeileddwyr yr 80au. Mae hyn yn cael ei archiwilio trwy integreiddio
ffurf, darluniadau a phatrwm arwyneb y darnau. Rwy’n dad-adeiladu fy narluniau
ac yn creu fy nehongliad fy hun o’r jwg haniaethol. Mae’r briodas rhwng ffurf a
swyddogaeth o gryn ddiddordeb imi, a’r syniad o newid siap llestri bob dydd
sy’n gyfarwydd ond eto yn estron.
Rwy’n dad-adeiladu siap y jwg gan blygu’r
darluniau a’u hail-ddylunio trwy ddefnyddio pad cynllun. Dyma lle maent yn esblygu
i fod yn wrthrychau tri dimensiwn. Mae’r cysyniad o ddarnau ar y cyd yn bwysig
i mi yn enwedig yr ormodiaeth o ffurf ac addurn mewn cyferbyniad â chyd-destun
yr ymchwil cychwynnol o finimaliaeth sy’n canolbwyntio ar werthoedd moel a
sylfaenol dylunio.
